The Life of Ngô Quyền
Ngô Quyền was born in 897 AD in Hanoi, Vietnam. HIs father was a prominent government official during the rule of the Tang Dynasty. In 931, Ngô Quyền joined the military. He quickly rose through the ranks and in 934, he he was promoted military governor of Ái Châu. Dương Đình Nghệ, The leader of Vietnams military, was assasinated and Ngô filled in as his replacment. Ngô Quyền was well recieved by the people of Vietnam. He was said to be a great leader due to his good looks, bravery and, most importantly, the pride he felt for his country.
Quyền's biggest accomplishment was at the Battle of Bach Dang. He forsaw the Chinese attacking on the Bach Dang River and prepared troops in advance. Quyền ordered stakes to be dug into the riverbed to defeat the Chinese. His plan worked perfectly and Vietnam regained their indepedence.
After the war for independence, Ngô Quyền was declared king and Vietnam gained full freedom over their government. He died in 944 at the age of 47.
